Maurice Shadbolt

Maurice Shadbolt 1932-2004

Writer Maurice Shadbolt died in Taumaranui in October after a long illness. He worked as a journalist and a scriptwriter before going to Europe in the late 50s. Two years later he published his first book, a short story collection, The New Zealanders, which made his name. In 1989 he was made a CBE for service to literature, and one of his last books, Dove on the Waters, published in 1997, won a Montana Book Award.

A personal memoir of Maurice Shadbolt by Philip Temple will appear in the next issue of New Zealand Books.
