New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults 2004

A Bird in the Hand: Keeping New Zealand Wildlife Safe by Janet Hunt of Waiheke won the New Zealand Post Book of the Year 2004 as well as the non-fiction prize. Other category winners were Cuthbert’s Babies, written and illustrated by Pamela Allen (picture book); Juggling with Mandarins by V M Jones (junior fiction); Thunder Road by Ted Dawe (young adult fiction and Best First Book).

Oh Hogwash, Sweet Pea! by Ngareta Gabel, illustrated by Astrid Jensen and Ali Teo, won the Children’s Choice Award, and an Honour Award was presented to Lloyd Jones and illustrator Graeme Gash for their picture book Napoleon and the Chicken Farmer.
