Poem – Judith Dell Panny

Quake

As cracks spring wide along Wellington’s spine
Slabs lift or lower, earth slides away
Detaching the green cap, eroding embankments
While towers subside, reshape, re-align

Slabs lift or lower, earth slides away
Runnels re-route and streams find new fissures
While towers subside, reshape, re-align
Water rejoices, cascades to the ocean

Runnels re-route and streams find new fissures
Foundations dislodge and roofs become rakish
Water rejoices, cascades to the ocean
Crashes are splintering views and investments

Foundations dislodge and roofs become rakish
Innards spill outwards as furniture slithers
Crashes are splintering views and investments
Bright panes explode in the gullies below

Innards spill outwards as furniture slithers
Earth shakes the parasites loose from its hide
Bright panes explode in the gullies below
As cracks spring wide along Wellington’s spine
