Poem — Jeanette Stace

Between

It is hard to tell its length,
it appears to have no breadth.
Between is a line of loops joining,
between is a series of leaps separating,
between is the arrow pointing.

Between likes to give you
little surprises, it doesn’t always
tell you what is on the other side.
Between likes to hide things in its gap,
in its silences. Between keeps on
moving about, it can shrink or grow
while you are watching. Between
knows you can’t live without it.
Between is as strong as iron.
