Research guide, Gavin McLean

A Guide to Art Galleries and Museums In New Zealand
Keith W Thomson,
Reed Books, Auckland, 1991, $14.95

This snappy little paperback wins out over Thomson’s earlier book in that it is cheap and portable enough to be bought and lugged around the countryside by tourists or travelling researchers. While some purists may quibble about museums that have been excluded, the at-a-glance information on more than 200 public and private museums should satisfy the needs of most genealogists, historians and tourists. Information includes potted histories, a summary of major holdings, opening hours, charges, location and contact phone/ fax numbers. Long may it be updated and reprinted.

Gavin McLean is a historian with the Historic Places Trust.
