Poem – Elspeth Sandys

Picking daisies

There was a day, early on
when we stopped by the roadside
to pick daisies
we were delighted
with this gift of the gods
and with ourselves

Had my impulsive ‘Look!’
been outside a shop –
struck by the blue of irises
so like your eyes –
you’d have driven on, laughing
protesting at the cost

A cost we paid
when love had run its course
and you went elsewhere
picking daisies
