Obituary — Ian Middleton

Ian Middleton 1928-2007

Novelist Ian Middleton, who died in Auckland in October, worked as a merchant seaman and an English teacher in Japan before becoming a fulltime writer and publishing his first novel, Pet Shop, in 1979. Later novels included his “Japanese trilogy”: Faces of Hachiko (1984), Sunflower (1986) and Reiko (1990). The strong colour and lushness of his writing have been attributed to his blindness. His older brother, O E Middleton of Dunedin, was also a writer.
