Poem – Bernadette Hall

Choccy Bic

“cut my nails
for me will ya,
sweet chick,”

says Nan

“they’re sharp
as bloody
knives.”

“sure thing”
says Round

who’s
been hanging out
for a choccy bic

“that’s the trick!”
says Nan

and sticks her feet
in a bowl of hot water

Cath exits
stage right
feeling sick

Baduns

Round
slides
the scissors
under a nail

hard and horny
like old turtle shell

she snips

there’s a crack
like a pistol shot

bits fly off
like bullets

Nan’s fingers
flick
quick as a wink
to mimic
six-shooters

“thur’s baduns”

she drawls
just like John Wayne

“down in thet arroyo!

let’s go get ‘em, darlin’!”
